Box Score Game Summary
Paige Wheeler scored on a breakaway three minutes into overtime to cap a furious Cougar comeback which saw them erase a 3-0 third-period deficit and score a 4-3 win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday night in a Canada West women's hockey game in Vancouver.
Put in alone off a pass from
Kendra Finch, Wheeler deked to her backhand and slipped the puck over UBC goalie Melinda Choy, giving the Cougars their fourth win in the last five games.
After going into the third down by three, the Cougars got on the board with a goal from
Gina Campbell just shy of the four-minute mark and pulled to within one after a power play goal from Finch midway through the period.
Rianne Wight then potted her CIS-leading ninth goal of the season, tying the game on the power play with just 50 seconds remaining in the contest.
The win improves Regina's record to 4-1-1. The Cougars are tied with Alberta (4-3-1) for second place in the Canada West standings.
“It was a pretty good win for us,” Cougars head coach Sarah Howald said. “It's always difficult to come from behind on the road, and we showed good resilience today.”
Lisa Urban made 27 saves in the win for the Cougars, while Choy made 33 saves for UBC (3-2-1). Regina was 2-for-4 on the power play and held UBC scoreless in its four opportunities with the man advantage.
The Cougars will return home next weekend for a pair of games against Manitoba (3-3-0) at The Co-Operators Centre.
