Box Score Game Summary

The University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Dinos on Friday night in the team's home opener at The Co-Operators Centre.

Playing in her first game at the CIS level after an illustrious career at the national level, University of Calgary forward Hayley Wickenheiser had a three-point night to help propel the Dinos (1-0-0) to victory. Wickenheiser had two of Calgary's goals, while Nicole Kuglin and Maddison Gee also tallied for the Dinos.

Rianne Wight scored a pair for the Cougars, while Paige Wheeler notched the other goal for Regina (0-1-0).

Calgary's Amanda Tapp made 20 saves for the win, while Lisa Urban recorded 21 saves for the Cougars.

Wickenheiser recorded the only goal of the first period, scoring on a 5-on-3 power play with help from Caitlin O'Hara and Elana Lovell.

The second period saw a flurry of goals scored. Regina tied the score at one early in the frame as Wight found a loose puck in front of the net and buried it for a power play marker.

Calgary regained its lead at 8:48 when Erin Davidson picked the puck up and potted the feed from Wickenheiser to put the Dinos up 2-1. Three minutes later, Calgary increased its lead to two when Wickenheiser netted her second of the game after showing some patience and going top shelf on Urban.

Regina would draw close in the second as Wheeler scored on the power play at 14:33. The Cougars' top scorer from last season, Kelcie McCutcheon, had the assist.

Calgary would again restore a two-goal lead in the third when Gee scored on a partial break away that was set up by Melissa Zubick at 5:03.

Wight scored her second of the night late in the third to make things interesting, with assists from McCutcheon and Wheeler, but the Cougars couldn't complete the comeback.

Wheeler matched Wickenheiser's three-point night with two goals and an assist of her own, while McCutcheon had two assists in the loss.

Regina went 2-for-6 on the powerplay, while Calgary was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at 7 p.m. at The Co-Operators Centre.
