Box Score Game Summary
Rianne Wight scored both goals as the University of Regina's women's hockey team scored a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night in a Canada West game at The Co-Operators Centre.
Wight tied up the game with a goal late in the first period, then scored the game-winner after driving hard to the net and hammering home a rebound with just four minutes left in the contest. Wight's linemates
Kelcie McCutcheon and
Paige Wheeler recorded assists on both goals.
Lisa Urban was solid in net for the Cougars, stopping 29 of 30 shots as Regina improves to 1-1-0 on the season.
The Dinos opened up the scoring just over five minutes into the first. Calgary forward Hayley Wickenheiser threw a harmless-looking shot towards the Cougar net, but Elana Lovell got a stick on it and redirected it past Urban.
Wight's first goal of the contest came with just under two minutes left in the opening frame, as she beat Calgary's Amanda Tapp with a wraparound to tie the game at one.
The two teams remained scoreless until Wight's marker late in the third, with both goalies making key saves to keep the score knotted at one.
Wight had a chance to score the go-ahead goal with six minutes left in the third, but Calgary defenceman Casey Irving made a diving poke-check to stymie the partial breakaway. She made good the following shift, picking up a rebound off a Wheeler shot and beating Tapp to give the Cougars the lead.
Urban made several stops late to keep the Cougars on top, most notably on a Kira Sonnenberg breakaway with the Dinos on the power play.
Tapp ended up with 26 saves for Calgary (1-1-0). The Dinos will play a home-and-home against Lethbridge next weekend.
The Cougars will be back in action next weekend with a home-and-home against Saskatchewan. The teams will play in Regina on Friday night and in Saskatoon on Saturday night.
NOTES: Kelcie McCutcheon has assisted on all five of the U of R's goals this season.
