Box Score Game Summary

The University of Regina's men's hockey team suffered a 4-2 loss to the No. 1-ranked Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night in a Canada West game at The Co-Operators Centre.

Ben Lindemulder, Johnny Lazo, Chad Klassen, and Derek Ryan all scored for Alberta, while Ryan Sawka and Carter Selinger replied for the Cougars.

Real Cyr made 27 saves between the pipes for the Golden Bears, who move to 9-1-0 on the season and now hold a four-point lead atop the Canada West standings. Adam Ward made 32 stops for the Cougars (4-8-0).

The Cougars started the game strong after being awarded a power play just 40 seconds into the game which they would capitalize on. Sawka fired a wrist shot over Cyr's shoulder to open the scoring, with Dillon Johnstone and Brett Leffler recording helpers.

Just four minutes later, the Golden Bears tied it up with a power play goal of their own after Lindemulder fired slap shot past Ward to notch his first CIS goal.

The Cougars took the lead again with their second power play goal of the period, as Selinger took a pass from Matt Strueby and picked the top corner from a bad angle.

The first-period scoring wasn't done there, as Alberta's Johnny Lazo eventually located the puck in a goalmouth scramble and slid it past Ward to knot the game at 2-2 with four minutes left in the first.

Alberta took its first lead of the game just a minute into the second period, as Klassen – Canada West's scoring leader – beat Ward with Derek Ryan and Jean-Pierre Szaszkiewicz assisting on the play.

After dominating much of the third period, the Golden Bears added an insurance goal at 11:05 with yet another power play goal. Ryan took a pass from Klassen and beat Ward over the shoulder, giving Alberta a two-goal cushion that the Golden Bears would hang on to.

Alberta will be in action next weekend at home against Saskatchewan, while the Cougars will hit the road to square off with Lethbridge for the first and second time in conference play.
