The University of Regina's women's basketball team improved its Canada West record to 7-0 on Friday night after defeating the No. 1-ranked and previously unbeaten Victoria Vikes by a 72-49 margin.

The Cougars won the game with stifling defence, allowing just 32 points in the final three quarters and holding Victoria to a season-low 49 points.

Gabrielle Gheyssen was 4-for-11 from downtown and led the Cougars with 16 points. Joanna Zalesiak had 15 points, while Anne Mercer chipped in with 13. Lindsay Ledingham tied for the game high with 10 rebounds and fell just one point short of a double-double.

Kayla Dykstra led Victoria (8-1) with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Vanessa Forstbauer scored 11 for the Vikes.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Victoria.
