Big fourth quarter leads No. 1 Victoria to win over Cougars

The No. 1-ranked Victoria Vikes exploded for 31 points in the fourth quarter to earn a weekend split with a 75-65 win over the University of Regina in a Canada West women's basketball game in Victoria.

The Cougars had a seven-point lead after three quarters, but Victoria went on a 17-4 run over the first five minutes of the fourth to seize control of the game. The Vikes never led by less than six after that, dealing Regina (7-1) its first loss of the conference schedule.

Victoria (9-1) was led by Kayla Dykstra's 23 points and eight rebounds. Cassandra Goodis had 15 points for the Vikes, while Jane Anholt had 12. Vanessa Forstbauer played all 40 minutes for the Vikes as the home side mostly went with a six-player rotation.

Joanna Zalesiak had the game's lone double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for the Cougars. Lindsay Ledingham and Carly Graham also scored 14 for Regina, while Anne Mercer matched Zalesiak with 10 rebounds.

The Cougars will return home next weekend to face Calgary (3-5) on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
