Box Score Game Summary

Jacey Jones' first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time for the University of Regina's women's hockey team, as the second-year forward scored 2:26 into overtime to give the Cougars a 6-5 win over Lethbridge on Saturday night at The Co-Operators Centre.

The Cougars held a three-goal lead in the third period, but Lethbridge fought all the way back to send the game into overtime for the second consecutive night. Jones' game-winner helped Regina improve to 5-5-2 on the season, while Lethbridge moves to 3-7-2.

Lisa Urban made 32 saves in the win for the Cougars, while Lethbridge goalie Crystal Patterson stopped 37 of Regina's 43 shots.

Regina's top line of Kelcie McCutcheon, Paige Wheeler, and Rianne Wight needed just over two minutes to get on the scoresheet. Wheeler scored her sixth of the season with assists from her two linemates to put the Cougars up early with a power play goal.

Hillary Lerat scored another goal on the power play with four minutes left in the opening frame for the Cougars, but the two-goal advantage was brief as Lethbridge's Shelby Ballendine scored her seventh of the season two minutes later.

The two teams combined for three goals in under three minutes as the midway point of the second approached. Kaitlin Sherven's scored her first career goal at the 7:37 mark, but Lethbridge had another quick reply in the form of a Katie Mucha power play marker. Wight restored the two-goal lead with her Canada West-leading 12th of the season less than two minutes after Mucha's tally.

Kendyll Kolbeck extended Regina's lead to three with a goal three minutes into the third, but the Pronghorns were far from out of it. Ashley Beattie – Friday's overtime hero for Lethbridge – scored on the power play nine minutes in, then Glenda Edie and Megan Bailey scored in the span of 53 seconds late in the period to knot the game at five apiece and set the stage for Jones' overtime heroics.

The Cougars outshot Lethbridge 2-1 in overtime and 43-36 for the game. The Pronghorns were 3-for-8 with the power play, while Regina was successful on three of its seven opportunities with the man advantage.

Lethbridge will finish off the first half of the Canada West schedule at home next weekend against Saskatchewan (7-5-0), while the Cougars will travel to Calgary next weekend for a pair of games against the Dinos (7-4-1).
