Box Score Game Summary

Third-year goaltender Dustin Butler backstopped the University of Calgary to a 3-0 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West men's hockey game at The Co-Operators Centre.

Butler stopped all 27 shots sent his way, while Brock Nixon and Colton Grant opened the scoring with goals just 30 seconds apart midway through the second period. Taylor Rovatti notched an insurance marker for the Dinos with three minutes left in the contest.

The win improves Calgary's record to 7-4-2, while the Cougars drop to 5-10-0 on the season.

Neither team was able to hit the scoresheet in a first period that saw the Dinos outshoot Regina by a 13-11 margin. The scoring didn't start until the 11-minute mark of the second, when Nixon scored his second of the season with help from Kodie Curran.

It only took Calgary 30 seconds to extend that lead to two. Grant scored his third goal of the Canada West schedule with helpers from Nixon and conference goals leader Reid Jorgensen at 11:30. The Cougars outshot Calgary 12-8 in the middle frame but were unable to solve Butler.

The two teams combined for just nine shots in the third. Jevon Desautels and Jerrid Sauer assisted on Rovatti's goal, which put the contest away at the 17:12 mark.

The Cougars were 0-for-2 on the power play, while Calgary was scoreless on its only opportunity with the man advantage. The teams combined for just 10 minutes in penalties.

Regina's Adam Ward made 23 saves in the loss.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
