Box Score Game Summary
The University of Regina's men's hockey team held on for a wild 6-5 win on Saturday night in a Canada West game at The Co-Operators Centre.
The Cougars took a 6-2 lead after a
Terrance DeLaronde power play goal 12 minutes into the third, but Calgary got goals from Blake Clement and Reid Jorgensen to crawl to within two. Brock Nixon scored with the extra attacker on for the Dinos with 35 seconds left, but the Cougars were able to hang on for the victory.
“I thought we played exceptionally well for 56 minutes tonight,” Cougars head coach
Blaine Sautner said. “We were running three lines for most of the weekend, so we might have run into some fatigue at the end but the guys battled hard and that's all we ask them to do out there.”
Dillon Johnstone had two goals for the Cougars, while
Adam McPherson,
Lucas Isley,
Ryan Sawka, and DeLaronde all scored singles and
Tyler Penny had three assists.
Adam Ward stopped 26 shots in the win as Regina improves its Canada West record to 6-10-0.
Breyden DeCock and Joel Eisenkirch also scored for Calgary, which falls to 7-5-2 with the loss. Kris Lazaruk was tagged with the loss for the Dinos after allowing five goals in the first two periods. Dustin Butler came in for the third and stopped seven of eight shots in relief of Lazaruk.
The Cougars were 4-for-10 on the power play, as the Dinos were assessed 67 minutes in penalties during the contest. Calgary was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
The Cougars return to action next weekend with a pair of non-conference games against Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, while the Dinos will return to the ice in early January.
