The University of Regina's women's basketball team moved into sole possession of first place in the Canada West standings after edging the Alberta Pandas 77-74 on Friday night in Alberta.

Joanna Zalesiak broke a 62-62 tie early in the fourth quarter, giving the Cougars a lead that they would never relinquish. The No. 8-ranked Pandas stayed within striking distance, but Regina was able to hold them off down the stretch for the victory.
The win improves the No. 2 Cougars' conference record to 10-1 on the season, giving them a one-game lead over the Pandas (9-2).
Anne Mercer had 15 points and 10 rebounds to secure the game's lone double-double. Making her second start of the season,
Carly Graham also had 15 points for the Cougars.
Gabrielle Gheyssen was 4-for-6 from three-point land and ended up with 13 points, while
Danielle Schmidt was 7-for-8 from the free throw line, scored 11 points, and had a team-high four steals.
Marisa Haylett was 9-for-13 from the field and had a game-high 25 points for Alberta. Nicole Clarke came off the bench to score 15 for the Pandas, while Anneka Bakker scored 13.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Edmonton.
