Pandas earn split with 81-58 win over Cougars

The University of Regina's women's basketball team suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday night with an 81-58 loss to the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton.

The Cougars (10-2) were within striking distance even into the fourth quarter, but a Danielle Schmidt bucket with just under seven minutes left was the U of R's final two points of the contest.

Alberta (10-2) scored the final 18 points of the contest, turning a five-point advantage into an insurmountable lead.

Five Pandas scored in double figures, led by Anneka Bakker's 20 points. Marisa Haylett scored 15 for Alberta, while Katie Arbuthnot and Nicole Clarke both had 11 and Georgia Popovici scored 10.

Joanna Zalesiak scored a game-high 25 points and addded seven steals and six rebounds for the Cougars in the loss. Anne Mercer led all players with 10 rebounds.

The Cougars will return to action with non-conference games against McMaster and Saskatchewan on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 in Saskatoon.
