Prairie Division champs Regina finish off against Huskies

2/12/2010 10:47:37 AM

With the Prairie Division title locked up, the University of Regina's women's basketball team finishes up the Canada West regular season schedule this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The outcome of this weekend's games will have no bearing on the standings. The Cougars clinched first place in the division last weekend, while Saskatchewan will finish in third place and head to Victoria for the first round of the playoffs.

No. 2-ranked Regina will host the Canada West wildcard team in a Canada West quarterfinal series that will begin on Feb. 26. The wildcard team will be one of Calgary, Lethbridge, or Trinity Western depending on the result of Saturday night's Dinos/Pronghorns game. A win by Calgary would give the Dinos the wildcard spot, but a Lethbridge victory would mean that the wildcard spot would be determined by a vote between the Pronghorns and Trinity Western by the coaches of the conference's non-playoff teams.

Brittany Read continues to average a double-double for the Cougars, averaging 14.7 points and a Canada West-leading 10.2 rebounds per game. Joanna Zalesiak is just behind Read, scoring 14.6 points per game to go along with her team-leading 80 assists.

Lindsay DeGroot (18.4) and Kim Tulloch (12.4) both average in double figures in points per game for the Huskies.

The teams will meet on Friday night at the CKHS in Regina and on Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Live stats and video webcasts will be available for both games this weekend. Find the links under the calendar on the right-hand side of reginacougars.com.
