Cougars look to clinch playoff spot against Lethbridge

2/12/2010 9:57:05 AM

With just four games left on the Canada West regular season schedule, the University of Regina's women's hockey team hosts the Lethbridge Pronghorns this weekend at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

The Cougars can clinch the fourth and final Canada West postseason berth this weekend, but will need to defeat the Pronghorns on both Friday and Saturday to do so.

Regina comes into the game in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings, one point up on fifth-place UBC and four points ahead of sixth-place Lethbridge. The Cougars have two games in hand on the Thunderbirds, who finish off their regular season this weekend with a pair of games against Calgary. Lethbridge's last two games on the schedule are against those same Dinos next weekend.

The Cougars (5-9-6) are hoping to rebound from a pair of road losses at Manitoba last weekend, as they lost two 5-1 decisions to the No. 6-ranked Bisons. Rianne Wight and Kelsie Graham are tied for the team lead with 13 points each, while Wight and Kelcie McCutcheon have both scored a team-high seven goals. Lisa Urban has started all 20 games between the pipes for Regina.

Lethbridge (4-12-4) comes into the weekend on a four-game losing streak, as they've lost twice to Calgary and twice to Alberta since beating UBC back on Jan. 23. Second-year forward Brittney Kaye leads the Pronghorns in goals (6), assists (8), and points (14) this season, while fifth-year goalie Kailey McMaster has 18 appearances in the team's 20 games.

The two teams met twice earlier this season in Lethbridge, with the Cougars scoring a 3-0 win back on Oct. 16 and the Pronghorns replying with a 2-1 overtime win the next night. Regina holds a 23-11-1 advantage over Lethbridge in the all-time series.

The Cougars will finish off their regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against No. 7-ranked Saskatchewan.
