Box Score Game Summary
Kendra Finch's first goal of her CIS career couldn't have come at a better time, as the rookie forward notched the game-winning tally in Regina's 2-1 win over Lethbridge in Canada West women's hockey action at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
Finch scored on a wraparound with her team on a power play just short of the five minute mark of the third period, breaking a 1-1 tie that had stood since the waning moments of the first.
“We had a slow start, but we battled pretty hard in the second and third,” Cougars head coach Sarah Howald said. “We had to kill off a lot of penalties, but we were able to do that and come through with the win.”
Regina held the Pronghorns scoreless in their eight power play opportunities, while the Cougars were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
J.J. Marshall's first goal of the season opened up the scoring for Lethbridge midway through the first period, but
Kelsie Graham replied for the Cougars late in the frame. The score remained knotted at one until Finch's goal in the third.
Lisa Urban stood tall between the pipes for the Cougars, stopping 29 of Lethbridge's 30 shots to earn her sixth victory of the season. Kailey McMaster made 16 saves for the Pronghorns in the loss.
The win puts the Cougars three points up on fifth-place UBC, and Regina can clinch the final Canada West postseason berth with another victory over Lethbridge on Saturday night.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
