Cougars out of playoff contention after 4-3 loss to Pronghorns

The University of Regina's men's hockey team suffered a 4-3 loss to the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night, dashing the Cougars' chances of qualifying for a Canada West playoff berth.

The loss, Regina's third in a row, mathematically eliminated the Cougars from the playoffs. They had been one of the hottest teams in the conference after the Christmas break, but needed to be close to flawless in the second half of the schedule to reel in a postseason spot.

Lethbridge led 1-0 after the first period and 4-1 at the second intermission. Dillon Johnstone scored for the Cougars five minutes into the third and Mark Nelson drew the Cougars to within one in the game's final minute, but Regina was unable to score the tying goal.

Adam Chorneyko had a goal and two assists for the Pronghorns, giving him his second three-point game in as many nights. Dustin Moore scored twice for Lethbridge, while Winston Day Chief scored the other.

Partik Bhungal scored Regina's first goal of the game midway through the second period.

Scott Bowles made 23 saves in the win for Lethbridge, while Adam Ward made 29 saves for the Cougars.

Regina will host No. 2-ranked Alberta next weekend at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
