Box Score Game Summary
The University of Regina's women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep and clinched a Canada West playoff spot after defeating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-2 on Saturday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
With the score tied at two in the third period,
Gina Campbell notched her third goal of the season on the power play to put Regina up one. The Cougars hung onto the lead for the remainder of the game, icing the win after an empty net goal by
Rianne Wight in the final minute.
The win clinches fourth place in the conference for the Cougars (7-9-6), who are three points clear of UBC. Regina would have clinched a playoff berth even with a loss, as the Thunderbirds were defeated by Calgary on Saturday night.
Kelcie McCutcheon got the Cougars off to a blazing start against the Pronghorns, scoring two goals in the opening three minutes. Her first goal came right off the opening faceoff, as she took a pass from
Paige Wheeler and scored just nine seconds into the game. McCutcheon's second goal on Saturday – and her team-leading ninth of the season – was scored on the power play just before the three-minute mark of the first.
Lethbridge replied with a goal from Dayna Janzen three minutes after McCutcheon's second goal. The Pronghorns tied up the game early in the second period after Amy Van Buskirk scored on the power play, but Regina goalie
Lisa Urban shut the door the rest of the way.
Urban ended up with 27 saves for the Cougars in the win, while Kailey McMaster made 26 saves for Lethbridge. Both teams were 1-for-6 on the power play.
The Pronghorns will close the lid on their 2009-10 campaign next weekend with a pair of games against Calgary.
The Cougars will finish off their regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against Saskatchewan that will have no effect on the conference standings. The following weekend, Regina will travel to Alberta for a best-of-three Canada West semifinal series which will begin on Feb. 26 in Edmonton.
