The University of Regina's women's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine games on Saturday night after defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen by a score of 62-51 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The game was a back-and-forth affair through the first three quarters until the Cougars took control of the contest with a 10-0 run that spanned the final 90 seconds of the third and the first four minutes of the fourth.
A three-pointer by Winnipeg's Jessica Stromberg brought the Wesmen to within six points with two minutes left, but the Cougars closed out the contest by scoring six of the game's final seven points.
Brittany Read had a big double-double for Regina, posting 13 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Carmen Stewart (12),
Stacey Walker (11), and
Joanna Zalesiak (10) also broke into double figures in points for the Cougars, who improve their conference record to an impressive 16-2 with the win.
Winnipeg was led by Stromberg, who tied Read for the game high with 13 points and added six rebounds. Alex MacIver pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds for the Wesmen.
Winnipeg drops to 10-9 with the loss. The Wesmen will close out their Canada West regular season with a home game against Manitoba (7-12) on Thursday.
The Cougars finish off their conference schedule next weekend with a home-and-home series against Saskatchewan (12-6).
