Huskies take out Cougars in CIS bronze medal game

3/14/2010 12:26:06 PM

Box Score Despite a game-high 26 points from second-year guard Joanna Zalesiak, the University of Regina's women's basketball team fell 78-67 to the No. 3-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday afternoon in the bronze medal game at the 2010 CIS Championship at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton.

The No. 4-seeded Cougars started out strong, opening up a nine-point advantage after the first quarter thanks in large part to the hot perimeter shooting of Rebecca Schmidt. Regina led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but Saskatchewan quickly erased the deficit with a 16-3 run in the second quarter and the two teams went into the halftime break knotted at 37.

The Huskies took control of the game in the third quarter, going on a 12-0 run that was capped by back-to-back three-pointers by Jill Humbert and outscoring the Cougars by a 23-15 margin. Consecutive buckets by Zalesiak pulled Regina to within four points with eight minutes left in the fourth, but that was as close as the Cougars would come. Seven straight points by Saskatchewan gave the Huskies a double-digit lead and they were able to hold off Regina down the stretch to secure the victory.

Lindsay DeGroot scored 24 points for Saskatchewan, while Humbert scored 19 and dished out seven assists. Kim Tulloch had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies, with Lauren Whyte scoring 10 in just 12 minutes on the floor.

The third-place finish is Saskatchewan's highest in its five national tournament appearances.

Zalesiak was 9-for-17 from the field and had seven assists and seven rebounds to go along with her 26 points. Third-year post Brittany Read had the game's lone double-double, scoring 17 and adding 15 rebounds. Schmidt had nine points for the Cougars, all of which came off of three-pointers in the first quarter. Gabrielle Gheyssen had eight points and eight rebounds, while Carmen Stewart had five points and five rebounds for Regina before fouling out in the fourth.

NOTES: Sunday marked the final game in a U of R uniform for three Cougars, including Schmidt, Stewart, and point guard Stacey Walker ... all three spent five seasons with the Cougars and played in three consecutive national tournaments.
