Simon Fraser defeats Cougars for conference title

The University of Regina's women's basketball team lost 92-62 to Simon Fraser on Saturday night in the Canada West championship game in Burnaby, B.C.

The Clan opened up a 15-point lead by the midway point of the first quarter and never looked back, holding a double-digit lead for almost the entire game. The win gives Simon Fraser its second consecutive Canada West championship and its fifth conference title overall.

Robyn Buna had a game-high 20 points for the Clan and didn't miss a single shot, going 7-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Matteke Hutzler and Kate Hole both had 15 points for Simon Fraser, while Kristina Collins scored 11 and Katie Miyazaki chipped in with 10. Hole added 10 rebounds to record the game's lone double-double.

Joanna Zalesiak led the Cougars with 17 points, while Lindsay Ledingham had 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Cougars, who were playing without injured all-star post Brittany Read, take home their third consecutive Canada West silver medal.

Both Simon Fraser and Regina will travel to Hamilton, Ont. next weekend to play in the 2010 CIS Championship.
