Cougars, UBC meet at The Co-Operators Centre

1/20/2011 5:37:27 PM

The University of Regina's women's hockey team hosts the UBC Thunderbirds at The Co-Operators Centre on Friday and Saturday night in the Cougars' second last home weekend of the Canada West schedule.

The Cougars (5-9-2) had last weekend off after starting off the second half of the conference schedule with a pair of losses to Saskatchewan on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8. They'll be looking to get back on the winning track this weekend against the Thunderbirds, who bring a 4-11-1 Canada West record into the series.

The always-dangerous line of Rianne Wight, Kelcie McCutcheon, and Paige Wheeler has combined to score 23 of the Cougars' 36 goals this season. Wight has scored 13 of those, the most by a U of R player since Karissa Swan scored 14 during the 2007-08 campaign. Wight ranks seventh in Canada West with 18 points, while Wheeler is tied for eighth with 17.

Lisa Urban has started all 16 contests between the pipes for the Cougars this season and should get the call in both games this weekend, though first-year goalie Morgan Cooper got into her first Canada West game at Saskatchewan in relief of Urban back on Jan. 16.

Third-year forward Kaitlin Imai leads UBC with 12 points (four goals, eight assists) this season, while rookie Tatiana Rafter has a team-high seven goals on the season. Melinda Choy is one of two Canada West goalies (along with Urban) to have started each of their team's games this season.

The two teams met earlier this season in Vancouver. Both games of the weekend series needed extra time, as the Thunderbirds took a 4-3 shootout win on Oct. 29 and the Cougars won 4-3 the next night thanks to an overtime goal by Wheeler.

Both of this weekend's games will face off at 7 p.m. The Cougars will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games at Manitoba, while UBC will host the University of Lethbridge.
