Box Score Game Summary

The University of Regina's men's hockey team staged a rally after being down 3-0 at one point in the second period, but came up short as the UBC Thunderbirds came up with a 5-3 win on Friday night in Vancouver.

Mike Liambis scored the lone goal of the first period for the Thunderbirds, then goals by Max Gordichuck and Brennan Sonne gave UBC a three-goal lead by the seven-minute mark of the second period.

Craig Cuthbert's third of the season - an unassisted effort - got the Cougars on the board just over a minute after Sonne's goal, and Brett Leffler cut the deficit to one with a nice shot while breaking down the right wing.

Max Grassi put the Thunderbirds up 4-2 going into the second intermission, but Dillon Johnstone replied with his fifth of the season on the power play just before the four-minute mark of the third period.

The Cougars had three other power play opportunities in the third - including a 21-second 5-on-3 midway through the frame - but were unable to capitalize. Matthew Schneider iced the victory with an empty netter for UBC at 19:47.

Less than 24 hours after being pressed into duty as an emergency backup for the San Jose Sharks, Jordan White made 16 saves to record the win for UBC. Adam Ward made 31 saves for the Cougars.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Vancouver.
