Box Score Game Summary
Adam Ward made 34 saves to backstop the University of Regina's men's hockey team to a 1-0 win over the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-Operators Centre.
Ward made 10 stops in both the first and third periods and stopped 14 in the second, while
Dillon Johnstone scored the game's lone goal early in the third period.
“It was a simple game plan tonight and we made sure we were patient, kept pucks deep, and limited turnovers and odd-man rushes,” head coach
Blaine Sautner said. “(Ward) did exactly what you would hope a fifth-year player will do for you. He kept square to the shooter, trapped a lot of pucks, and didn't let out a lot of rebounds.”
After the two teams played to a scoreless draw through 40 minutes, Johnstone barrelled down the right wing and snapped a shot that beat Manitoba goaltender Steve Christie and hit the bottom of the cross bar before going in.
Theran Yeo and
Craig Cuthbert both drew assists on Johnstone's second game-winning goal of the season.
The Cougars were 0-for-4 on the power play, while Manitoba was held scoreless on its three opportunities with the man advantage.
Christie made 16 stops for Manitoba as the Bisons (10-5-4) lose in regulation for just the fifth time this season. The Cougars improve to 7-13-1 with the victory.
The two teams will meet for the sixth and final time during the Canada West schedule on Saturday night at The Co-Operators Centre. Faceoff is again scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTES: Ward's shutout was the third of his U of R career.
