Box Score Game Summary
Rae-Lynn Somogyi's power play goal in the third period stood up as the game winner as the University of Regina's women's hockey team edged the Manitoba Bisons by a 2-1 margin on Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Somogyi's goal was scored just shy of the seven-minute mark of the third and not long after Manitoba had knotted the game at one goal apiece with a power play marker of its own.
Regina goalie
Lisa Urban shut the door after Somogyi's first of the season, making 11 saves in the third period alone to secure the team's seventh win of the year.
“We did a lot of good things defensively today and got solid goaltending from Lisa,” head coach
Sarah Hodges said. “We got more confident with the puck as the game went on, and overall we played a solid game and got a quality road win.”
The U of R's high-octane first line got into the act early in the second, as
Rianne Wight opened the scoring for the Cougars 35 seconds into the middle frame with helpers from
Paige Wheeler and
Kelcie McCutcheon. Wight's goal was her 14th of the season, which ties for the second most by a Canada West player this season.
The score stayed 1-0 in favour of the visitors until the five-minute mark of the third, when Amy Lee scored late in a power play with assists from Caitlin MacDonald and Nellie Minshull. Somogyi's winner came just 1:37 after Lee's goal.
Urban made 27 saves for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 7-10-2. Tara Lacquette made 16 saves in the loss for Manitoba.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.
