The University of Regina's men's hockey team returns to the ice this weekend with a home-and-home against Saskatchewan that begins on Friday in Regina and wraps up with a Saturday night game in Saskatoon.
The Cougars (6-10-0) enter the weekend in seventh place in the Canada West standings with 12 points, but sit just four back of Saskatchewan (8-6-0) and Calgary (7-5-2), who are tied for third place with 16 points.
After a month off for the December break, the Cougars got in some game action last weekend at the Challenge Cup, hosted by SAIT in Calgary. Regina got goals from
Tyler Penny,
Lucas Isley,
Cody Thoring, and
Matt Sawa in a 4-3 win over Lethbridge on Sunday, but lost 4-1 to Alberta on Monday.
Entering the second half of the season,
Terrance DeLaronde leads the Cougars with 10 points in 14 games played, while Isley has a team-high five goals.
Adam Ward has seen the bulk of the duty between the pipes for Regina, as the fifth-year goalie sports a 4-7 record, a 3.65 goals-against average, and an .894 save percentage.
Saskatchewan's offence is led by Steven DaSilva, who sits second in the conference with nine goals and leads the Huskies with 13 points, while Brett Ward – younger brother of Adam – ranks fourth among Canada West defencemen with eight points. David Reekie, who has started 11 of Saskatchewan's 14 games, has a 2.35 goals-against average and ranks third in Canada West with a .923 save percentage.
This weekend's games will mark the final times that the two teams will meet during the Canada West schedule. Regina and Saskatchewan have played four times this season, with both teams registering two wins.
NOTES: The Cougars added former Yorkton Terriers forward
Cody Zubko to the roster for the second semester … Zubko had four goals and an assist for five points in 13 games with the Fayetteville FireAntz (SPHL) earlier this season … the Cougars will also have the services of former UBC defenceman
Theran Yeo beginning with a two-game road series against his old team on Jan. 21 and 22.
