Box Score Game Summary

Kyle Bortis scored twice in the third period to break a scoreless tie, helping the University of Saskatchewan to a 3-1 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West men's hockey game at The Co-Operators Centre.

Bortis opened the scoring with a laser of a snap shot to the top shelf from the left faceoff dot with the Huskies enjoying a power play. He extended the lead six minutes later with his second of the period and fifth of the season after collecting a rebound at the side of the net and flipping a backhand past Cougar goalie Adam Ward.

Cody Gross replied for the Cougars just over a minute after Bortis's second marker, chipping a rebound past David Reekie after the Saskatchewan netminder made a save on a shot from the point. The proved to be the only offence that the home side would generate during the contest, and the Huskies' Travis Brisebois scored a late empty netter to ice the win.

Reekie ended up with 19 saves for the Huskies as they improve to 9-6-0 on the season. Ward made 28 stops for Regina (6-11-0).

Saskatchewan outshot Regina by a 9-4 margin in a scoreless first period, but the Cougars might have had the best chance in the opening frame when Matt Strueby sailed a snap shot through a crowd from the left point and rang it off the post 11 minutes in.

The game remained scoreless through two despite both teams enjoying a two-man advantage during the second period. Saskatchewan killed off a 47-second 5-on-3 midway through the period, while the Cougars held the Huskies scoreless on a brief 20-second 5-on-3 late in the frame.

Saskatchewan ended up with a 31-20 advantage in the shot department after outshooting the Cougars 13-6 in the third. The Huskies ended up going 1-for-6 on the power play, while Regina was held scoreless on its five opportunities with the man advantage.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Saskatoon.
