The University of Saskatchewan's women's hockey team skated to a 7-1 victory over the Regina Cougars tonight in both teams' Canada West opener on Friday night at Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon.

The Huskies led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two, then blew the doors wide open with four goals in the first nine minutes of the third.

Paige Wheeler (pictured) scored Regina's lone goal with just under two minutes remaining in the contest.

Danny Stone scored a pair for Saskatchewan, while Sara White, Cara Wooster, Kandace Cook, Kelsey Tulloch, and Kelsey Fenton all had singles. Julie Paetsch had a pair of assists for the Huskies, while goaltender Mackenzie Rizos stopped 23 of 24 shots to secure the victory.

Hillary Lerat and Rianne Wight both assisted on Wheeler's goal for the Cougars. First-year goaltender Jennifer Schmidt got the start between the pipes for Regina and made 24 saves.

Saskatchewan's power play was deadly in the win, as the Huskies converted on four of their nine opportunities. The Cougars were 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

The two teams will play the back end of the home-and-home on Saturday night in Regina. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
