The University of Regina's men's hockey team scored three power play goals in the first period and never looked back, skating to a 6-1 win over the No. 3-ranked Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at Max Bell Arena in Winnipeg.

Craig Cuthbert opened the scoring for the Cougars past the six-minute mark of the first period with Manitoba shorthanded following a penalty for too many men. Joel Kot then scored for Regina on a 5-on-3 late in the third, and Matt Strueby scored another exactly a minute later with the Cougars still up a man.

Brett Leffler added a fourth power play goal for Regina late in the second period following Manitoba's third too many men infraction of the contest.

Jeremy Schappert was the only Manitoba player to solve Cougar goalie Lucas Gore, as his goal with just under two minutes remaining in the second got the Bisons to within three.

That was as close as Manitoba came, as Terrance DeLaronde scored his third of the season and Leffler added his second of the game to give the Cougars a comfortable five-goal cushion.

The Cougars (1-4-0) ended up 4-for-8 on the power play, while Manitoba – which suffered its first conference loss of the season – was 0-for-6.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night.
