The University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 2-1 shootout victory over the No. 7-ranked Manitoba Bisons on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.
Both
Laura Olsen and
Kendra Finch were successful for the Cougars in the shootout, while Regina goaltender
Lisa Urban stopped both Manitoba attempts to secure the victory.
The Cougars improve to 1-2-0 with the victory, while Manitoba falls to 0-2-1 with the loss.
“We had a slow start but got a lot more confident as the game went on,” Cougars head coach
Sarah Hodges said. “We played a great overall team game and it was great to come up with the 'W' in the shootout.”
After a scoreless first,
Courtney Mish (pictured) joined the rush early in the second period and her shot through a screen beat Manitoba goaltender Leiette Klassen to give the first-year defenceman her first of her CIS career.
Rianne Wight and
Gina Campbell were awarded assists on Mish's goal.
Meagan Vestby tied up the game just past the 12-minute mark of the second period with what would turn out to be the final goal of regulation, as neither team was able to score in the third. Manitoba killed off two consecutive minor penalties in the third and outshot the Cougars by a 5-2 margin in the 10-minute overtime, but neither team was able to end the game before it headed to the shootout.
Regina ended up with a 31-29 advantage in shots during the contest. The Cougars were 0-for-5 on the power play, while Manitoba was 0-for-3.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
