Manitoba earns weekend split with 4-2 win over Cougars

The University of Manitoba's No. 7-ranked women's hockey team came up with a 4-2 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.

The Cougars held a 2-0 lead after Stephanie Sawchuk's first career goal four minutes into the second, but Manitoba scored three times in the middle frame to take the lead and added an insurance goal six minutes into the third.

Michelle Pawluk, Nellie Minshull, Brenley Anderson, and Jessica Carswell all scored for the Bisons, while goalie Leiette Klassen made 18 saves in the win.

Shalyn Cowan opened the scoring for the Cougars on the power play in the first period, notching the first of her career with helpers from Rianne Wight and Gina Campbell. Kaitlin Sherven assisted on Sawchuk's goal.

Lisa Urban got the start for the Cougars (1-3-0) and made 31 saves in the loss.

The Cougars were 1-for-5 on the power play, while Manitoba (1-2-1) was held scoreless on its three opportunities. Manitoba outshot Regina by a 35-20 margin, including 13-4 in the second period alone.

The Cougars will head to the West Coast next weekend for a pair of road games against UBC (1-1-0), while Manitoba will have a weekend off before hosting Saskatchewan (2-2-0) on Nov. 4 and Nov. 5.
