Matt Strueby scored twice as the University of Regina's men's hockey team cruised to a 5-1 win on Friday night over the UBC Thunderbirds in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.

Tyler Henry, Tyler Penny, and Ryan Sawka also scored for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 2-5-0 on the season. Rookie goaltender Lucas Gore made 28 saves for Regina and kept UBC off the board until the Thunderbirds' Wyatt Hamilton scored with less than three minutes left in the third.

“You always look for your team to play 60 minutes and I really thought we got a full 60 tonight,” head coach Blaine Sautner said. “I thought we battled hard and got a good team effort all around from the guys.”

Henry added two assists for a three-point night, while Craig Cuthbert also had two helpers.

UBC, which moves to 2-1-2 after suffering its first regulation loss of the season, outshot the Cougars by a 29-27 margin. Steven Stanford got the start between the pipes for the Thunderbirds, but was pulled just shy of the seven-minute mark after Regina's third goal of the contest. Jordan White came on in relief and made 14 saves.

Only five power plays were handed out during Friday's game, with UBC going 0-for-4 and Strueby's first goal coming on Regina's lone opportunity with the man advantage.

The two teams will finish off their weekend set on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

NOTES: Strueby now has a team-leading seven points on the season and is tied for fifth in Canada West.
