Matt Strueby's first CIS hat trick lifted the University of Regina's men's hockey team to a 4-1 win over No. 9 Calgary on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.
Strueby opened the scoring six minutes into the first period, then gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission after scoring what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with just over a minute left in the opening frame.
Blake Clement scored Calgary's lone goal of the contest with under a minute remaining in the second period, but
Carter Selinger restored the two-goal advantage for the Cougars with a goal five minutes into the third.
Strueby, who finished off the hat trick with an empty net goal in the waning moments of the game, now has a Canada West-leading seven goals on the season.
Calgary held a decisive 31-17 advantage in shots, but Cougar goalie
Lucas Gore made 30 saves to lock down his third win of the season. Kris Lazaruk made 13 saves for the Dinos.
Neither team was able to score with the man advantage despite plenty of opportunities for both squads. Calgary ended up 0-for-6 on the power play, while Regina was held scoreless on its eight chances. A total of 82 minutes in penalties were assessed, a total which includes five 10-minute misconducts.
The win improves Regina's Canada West record to 3-5-1 as the Cougars move into sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings, while Calgary falls to 6-5-0. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
