The No. 1-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team improved its conference record to 2-0 on Friday night with a 74-65 win over the Victoria Vikes in a Canada West game in Victoria.
The game was tight through the second half and the first part of the third quarter, with Victoria scoring seven consecutive points to pull to within one. That's when the Cougar defence clamped down, holding the Vikes without a point for almost six minutes of game time. Regina scored 11 consecutive points in a run that spanned the last three minutes of the third and the first two and a half minutes of the fourth, opening up a 14-point advantage.
The Vikes cut the lead down to six points with three minutes left in regulation, but the Cougars quickly restored order with a 9-1 run down the stretch to seal the win.
Carly Graham was lights out from downtown, becoming just the third University of Regina player to nail six three-pointers in a game since the Cougars joined Canada West. Graham ended up going 6-for-12 from beyond the arc, including hitting long balls on back-to-back possessions late in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.
Michelle Clark had 15 points for the Cougars and led all players with eight assists, while
Brittany Read and
Megan Chamberlin both had nine points and nine rebounds. Chamberlin's effort came in a spirited 11 minutes off the bench.
Chelsea McMullen led Victoria (1-2) with 18 points.
The Cougars (2-0) will be back in action on Saturday night with a game against No. 5-ranked UBC (1-0). Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (PDT) and will be webcast live at www.canadawest.tv.
