Fourth-year defenceman
Russ Nielsen scored midway through the second overtime to give the University of Regina's men's hockey team a 3-2 road win over Lethbridge and a weekend split with the Pronghorns.
With the Cougars on a 4-on-3 power play in the second extra session, a one-timer by Nielsen from the left circle beat Lethbridge goaltender Scott Bowles to give the U of R its fourth win of the season.
Lucas Gore made 30 saves between the pipes for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 4-7-1 with the win and hold a one-point lead over the Pronghorns for sixth place in the conference standings.
The Cougars led 2-0 through 40 minutes, as
Tyler Henry opened the scoring for Regina midway through the first and
Brett Leffler added to the lead with a rocket from inside the left circle that beat Bowles on the glove side.
All of Lethbridge's offence came during a span of 2:31 in the third period, as Dustin Moore and Curtis Cooper scored to tie up the game. Bowles made 29 saves for Lethbridge as the two teams both had 32 shots on goal.
The Cougars ended up 1-for-2 on the power play and killed off six of Lethbridge's seven opportunities with the man advantage.
Mark Schneider had two assists for Regina.
The U of R returns home next weekend to host Alberta on Friday and Saturday at The Co-operators Centre.
Friday, Nov. 18 – Cougars 2, Lethbridge 5 – [box]
The teams were scoreless after one period and tied at two after two, but the Lethbridge Pronghorns scored three times in the third to take a 5-2 win over the University of Regina in a Canada West men's hockey game on Friday night.
Tyler Henry and
Terrance DeLaronde both scored for the Cougars in the second, but Lethbridge goals by Winston Day Chief and Nick Hotson sent the two teams into the third tied up. Day Chief, Dustin Moore, and Daniel Iwanski all scored for Lethbridge during the Pronghorns' third-period outburst.
Scott Bowles made 31 saves in the win for Lethbridge, while rookie goaltender
Lucas Gore registered 29 stops for the Cougars. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night.
