The visiting Calgary Dinos came out strong on Saturday, but the top-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team recovered with a strong second quarter and cruised to an 84-67 win in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Calgary led by as many as 11 points late in the first quarter and held double-digit leads in the second as well, but the Cougars went on a massive 28-3 run to turn a 10-point deficit into a 15-point lead.
The Dinos cut into the lead and got to within three points two minutes into the fourth quarter after a pair of Tamara Jarrett free throws, but the Cougars scored 14 of the game's next 16 points to put the game out of reach.
Regina's backcourt duo of
Michelle Clark and
Joanna Zalesiak both scored 19 points for the Cougars, with Clark going 5-for-13 from downtown and Zalesiak adding nine assists, six steals, and six rebounds.
Lindsay Ledingham scored 15 points and added a game-high eight rebounds, while
Brittany Read had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Jenna Kaye led all players with 21 points for the Dinos and tied Ledingham with eight boards. Jarrett scored 17 for Calgary, while Alex Cole chipped in with 15.
Calgary, which came into the weekend undefeated, falls to 4-2 on the season and will host Victoria and UBC next weekend. The Cougars (5-0) will hit the road next weekend for games against conference newcomer UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers.
