Jennifer Schmidt (pictured) set a new school record with 54 saves, but the University of Regina's women's hockey team suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to No. 8 Alberta on Saturday night in Edmonton.
Schmidt, a first-year goalie from High River, Alta., made 19 saves in the second period alone and stopped 11 shots in the ten-minute overtime to send the game into a shootout, but Alberta was successful on all three of its attempts to give the Pandas their second win in as many nights over the Cougars.
The game's first five goals were all scored on the power play, beginning with Regina's
Paige Wheeler opening the scoring seven minutes into the second period.
Alberta's Sarah Hilworth and Katie Borbely both scored before the second intermission to give the Pandas a 2-1 lead, but the Cougars came out strong in the third with two goals in a span of just 24 seconds.
Chelsea Tekonomy's first of the season tied the game at two, and
Brooklyn Moskowy scored her fourth of the year to give the Cougars their second lead of the game.
That 3-2 lead lasted just a shade over three minutes, though. Karla Bourke scored what would turn out to be the lone even-strength goal of the game, tying up the game at three apiece.
The ten-minute overtime solved nothing, and Tess Houston, Hilworth, and Borbely were all successful for the Pandas in the shootout.
Kendra Finch also scored for Regina in the shootout, but a Kanesa Shwetz save on Moskowy in the opening round proved to be the difference.
Shwetz made 31 saves in regulation and overtime to secure the victory for Alberta, which improves to 6-1-5 on the season.
The Cougars were 3-for-5 on the power play, while Alberta ended up 2-for-5 on the night.
The Cougars (4-7-1) will be back in action on Thursday night against Saskatchewan at the Brandt Centre. The two teams will also play in Saskatoon on Saturday in the final game before the December break.
NOTES: Schmidt's 54 saves break the University of Regina single-game record that was previously held by
Lisa Urban, who made 50 saves in a game against Alberta back on Oct. 31, 2009.
