The University of Regina's women's basketball team was tested on the road by Thompson Rivers, but pulled away late in the contest and registered an 83-78 victory over the WolfPack on Saturday night in Kamloops, B.C.
The top-ranked Cougars built up a 13-point lead late in the third quarter, but saw it all but evaporate after Thompson Rivers (3-5) scored 10 consecutive points over the last minute of the third and the first minute of the fourth. The teams stayed close until midway through the fourth, when the Cougars reeled off nine consecutive points of their own to put the game away.
Joanna Zalesiak and
Lindsay Ledingham both had double-doubles for the Cougars, as Zalesiak had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Ledingham registered 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Carly Graham scored 12 points off the bench for Regina, while
Danielle Schmidt added 11 points.
Diane Schuetze had 21 points and 11 rebounds for Thompson Rivers. Tracy Kocs had 17 points in 23 minutes off the bench for the WolfPack.
The Cougars (7-0) have well over a month off before returning to the Canada West schedule at Brandon on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7.
