The University of Saskatchewan edged the Regina Cougars by a 2-1 score on Thursday night in a Canada West women's hockey game at the Brandt Centre.
Saskatchewan's offence came from a pair of unlikely sources, as rookie forward Lindsay Karst notched her first of her career six minutes into the second period after a scoreless first and defenceman Kelsey Harder - also a first-year player - scored her first early in the third.
Paige Wheeler scored for the Cougars with just a second remaining to ruin Saskatchewan goalie Mackenzie Rizos's shutout but it was too little, too late for the Cougars.
First-year goalie
Jennifer Schmidt made 40 saves for the Cougars as Saskatchewan outshot the home side by a 42-16 margin, while Rizos had 15 saves for the Huskies in the win.
Saskatchewan was 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Cougars were scoreless on their two opportunities with the man advantage.
The Huskies (9-4-0) move into a tie with Calgary for first place in the Canada West standings with the victory. Regina falls to 4-8-1 with the loss.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday in Saskatoon in a game that will be webcast live at www.canadawest.tv.
NOTES: Added to her 54-save effort last Saturday, Schmidt now has 94 saves in her past two games for the Cougars.
