The University of Saskatchewan defeated the Regina Cougars by a 7-3 score in a Canada West women's hockey game on Saturday afternoon at Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon.
The teams traded goals in the early going, with Saskatchewan's Julie Paetsch scoring 1:25 into the contest and
Gina Campbell replying for the Cougars just past the six-minute mark of the first.
But it was all Saskatchewan from there.
The Huskies scored five unanswered goals, including two in the span of 28 seconds early in the second period to push a two-goal lead at the first intermission to a 5-1 advantage for the home side.
Brooklyn Moskowy got one back for the Cougars late in the second and
Rianne Wight scored midway through the lead to cut the lead to 6-3, but any hopes of an improbable comeback were dashed 32 seconds after Wight's goal when Julie Paetsch scored her third of the night for the Huskies.
Mackenzie Rizos stopped 27 shots in the win for Saskatchewan, while
Jennifer Schmidt played the first and third periods between the pipes for the Cougars and
Lisa Urban came in for the second.
The Cougars (4-9-1) return to action on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31 with a pair of home non-conference games at NAIT and resume the Canada West schedule on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7 at Manitoba.
