The University of Regina's men's hockey team closes out its 2010-11 home schedule on Friday and Saturday against the Lethbridge Pronghorns at The Co-Operators Centre.
This weekend marks the final home games for both fifth-year goalie
Adam Ward and fourth-year defenceman
Cody Thoring.
Entering the weekend, Ward has made 61 starts in his five seasons as a Cougar. His career goals-against average of 3.33 ranks third in University of Regina history and he currently sits fourth on the school's all-time list with 21 conference victories. Ward is a student in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies and will graduate with a major in fitness and lifestyle.
One of six Cougars to appear in all 24 games this season, Thoring has been a key member of the team's defensive core for the last four seasons. Currently enjoying his best offensive season at the U of R, he leads the team's blueliners with nine points and is expected to graduate with a degree in business administration this spring.
Dillon Johnstone continued his hot play last weekend at Alberta, scoring twice in a 5-3 loss on Friday and extending his point streak to four games with an assist in a 4-1 setback on Saturday night. Both goalies were spectacular for the Cougars, as Ward got the call on Friday and made 43 saves, while #A.J. Whiffen# made 47 saves on Saturday.
Lethbridge enters the weekend very much in the Canada West playoff picture. The Pronghorns are in fifth place in the conference standings and four points back of fourth-place Manitoba, but have a game in hand on the Bisons. Nick Hotson and Winston Day Chief are tied for the team lead with 20 points, while Andrew Courtney has scored a team-high 10 goals this season. Scott Bowles has started 13 consecutive games between the pipes for the Pronghorns.
The Cougars will finish the season next weekend with a pair of road games against Calgary, while Lethbridge will have three games against Calgary and two against Saskatchewan remaining on the Canada West schedule.
