Playing at The Co-operators Centre in a Canada West game for the first time since mid-November, the University of Regina's women's hockey team hosts UBC this Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m.
The Cougars come into the UBC series with a 4-11-1 conference record after being edged twice by the Manitoba Bisons last weekend in Winnipeg. Regina was defeated 2-0 by Manitoba on Friday and lost 2-1 to the Bisons on Saturday in a game which featured the first career goal by Cougars first-year defenceman
Carleen Meszaros.
Paige Wheeler and
Brooklyn Moskowy have accounted for over 40% of Regina's goals this year. Wheeler has scored a team-high six this season, while Moskowy has put together an impressive rookie campaign with five goals on the year. Wheeler,
Rianne Wight, and
Gina Campbell are all knotted for the team lead with eight points.
Both veteran
Lisa Urban and rookie
Jennifer Schmidt got starts between the pipes for the Cougars last weekend. Schmidt continues to post impressive numbers in her first CIS season, sporting a .913 save percentage in nine games played this year.
UBC (1-11-2) split the season-opening weekend against Lethbridge, but come into Friday's game on a 10-game losing skid. The Cougars and UBC met twice earlier this season in Vancouver, with Regina coming away with a 4-3 shootout win on Oct. 28 and a 3-0 shutout victory on Oct. 29.
The U of R has a weekend off before returning to action on Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 at home against Calgary. The Cougars will end the Canada West schedule on Feb. 3 and Feb. 4 at Lethbridge and on Feb. 11 and Feb. 12 against Alberta.
