No. 1-ranked Cougars back at home against Winnipeg

1/26/2012 9:17:00 PM

At home for the second of three consecutive weekends, the University of Regina's women's basketball team hosts Winnipeg this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Off to their best start in program history after wins over Fraser Valley and Trinity Western last weekend, the No. 1-ranked Cougars (13-0) boast the only undefeated conference record in the nation and enter the weekend 2½ games up on Alberta for first in the Prairie Division.

Three Cougars come into the weekend series averaging in double figures in scoring, led by Michelle Clark's 14.7 points per game. Joanna Zalesiak checks in at an even 13 points per game and ranks second in the conference in assists and third in steals, while Lindsay Ledingham has averaged 11.8 points per contest and leads the team with 110 rebounds.

Winnipeg (8-6) enters the weekend in fifth place in the Prairie Division standings with a comfortable five-game cushion over sixth-place Manitoba. The Wesmen are just a game back of fourth-place Calgary and a game and a half behind third-place Saskatchewan, and would have an excellent chance of grabbing the Canada West wildcard berth even if they remain in fifth place in the division.

Amy Ogidan is Winnipeg's sparkplug, as the fifth-year guard leads the Wesmen in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks, and steals. Second-year guard Yael Kaplan is Winnipeg's only other player in double figures in scoring with 11 points per game, while third-year forward Alyssa Grant averages 9.1 points per contest. Stephanie Kleysen leads the Wesmen with an average of 7.8 rebounds per game.

The two teams met once in non-conference action, with the Cougars taking a 92-59 road win over the Wesmen back on Oct. 9.

Both games this weekend tip off at 6:15 p.m. and will be webcast live at www.canadawest.tv.

NOTES: The Cougars can officially clinch a Canada West postseason berth with a win in either game this weekend ... Regina has won 10 of the last 12 conference games between the two teams, but Winnipeg took a 65-63 overtime win the last time the Cougars and the Wesmen met in a Canada West game (Jan. 22, 2011).
