Cougars lose pair of defensive battles to Calgary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost a pair of defensive battles at Calgary over the weekend, getting edged 2-1 by the Dinos on Friday night and losing 2-0 on Saturday.

Friday, Jan. 27 – Cougars 1, Calgary 2 – Box Score

Kevin King's first Canada West goal eight minutes into the second stood up as the winner as the Dinos held off the Cougars for a 2-1 win on Friday night.

Walker Wintoneak scored for Calgary two and a half minutes into the contest before Regina's Tyler Penny answered with a power play goal 12 minutes into the opening frame.

Dustin Butler made 11 saves for the Dinos in the win, while Cougar goalie Andrew Hayes stopped 31 of Calgary's 33 shots but was pegged with the loss.

Saturday, Jan. 28 – Cougars 0, Calgary 2 – Box Score 

Lucas Gore had a stellar 36-save performance for the Cougars, but the U of R couldn't get the offence going and suffered a 2-0 defeat to Calgary.

The game stayed scoreless until five minutes into the third period, when Kodie Curran finally solved Gore and put the home side on the board. Brock Nixon added an insurance goal six minutes later to give the Dinos a two-goal cushion.

Dustin Butler had a 10-save shutout for Calgary.

The Cougars (4-16-2) will now prepare for a home series against Lethbridge, the team that the U of R will need to catch for the sixth and final Canada West playoff spot. Regina will enter the series five points back of Lethbridge, but with two games in hand on the Pronghorns.
