The Manitoba Bisons completed a weekend sweep over the Regina Cougars with a 4-1 win in Canada West men's hockey action on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Ian Duval scored twice for Manitoba while Blair Macaulay and Travis Mealy added singles for the Bisons, who got a 17-save effort from Jesse Deckert between the pipes.
Tyler Henry scored Regina's lone goal early in the third period.
Making his debut for the Cougars, goalie
Andrew Hayes (pictured) made 43 saves in a losing effort.
Duval opened up the scoring just short of the four-minute mark in the second period after taking a pass in the right circle and snapping a shot to the far side that beat Hayes. Macaulay notched his conference-leading 15th of the season after going to the backhand on a breakaway later in the period, and Duval added his second of the game on a wraparound just under three minutes after Macaulay's goal.
Manitoba was dominant in the middle frame, outscoring Regina by a 21-2 margin.
Henry got the Cougars on the board with his fourth of the season early in the third period, but Mealy's shot from the left point through traffic midway through the final stanza bounced off the post and in and essentially sealed the win for Manitoba.
Manitoba ended up with a 47-18 shot advantage during the contest. Neither team converted on the power play, as the Bisons were 0-for-6 and the Cougars ended up 0-for-5.
The victory improves No. 9-ranked Manitoba's Canada West record to 12-4-2, while the Cougars fall to 4-12-2 on the season.
Regina hits the road for a pair of games at UBC next weekend. Manitoba will have next weekend off before hosting Saskatchewan on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21.
