A goal by Nellie Minshull midway through the third stood as the winner as the University of Regina's women's hockey team was edged 2-1 by the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night in Winnipeg.
Jessica Carswell opened the scoring for the Bisons in the first period, while goalie Tara Lacquette stopped 26 of 27 shots to secure the victory. Regina's lone goal of the contest came just shy of the 12-minute mark of the second period when
Carleen Meszaros scored the first goal of her CIS career.
Manitoba, which secured a two-game weekend sweep over the Cougars with the victory, improves its Canada West record to 9-5-2 with the victory. Regina falls to 4-11-1 on the season.
The Cougars had a golden opportunity to get on the board early in the contest as
Paige Wheeler was awarded a penalty shot just 1:41 into the first period, but the fourth-year forward was stopped by Lacquette. Carswell's goal, which came off a rebound following a shot by Chantal DeSpiegelaere, was the only scoring in a first period which saw Manitoba hold an 8-7 advantage in shots.
Meszaros tied up the game midway through the second on the power play after her shot from the point beat Lacquette. Meszaros's goal – assisted by
Brooklyn Moskowy and
Hillary Lerat – was the only power play goal of the game, was the Cougars were 1-for-7 with the man advantage and Manitoba was held scoreless on its five opportunities.
Minshull's goal, which came on a shot roofed from in tight, would be the final scoring of the contest as the Cougars generated 12 shots in the final 20 minutes but were unable to solve Lacquette.

Jennifer Schmidt got the call between the pipes for the Cougars and stopped 20 of 22 Manitoba shots.
The Cougars will be back at home this weekend, as they'll host the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. on both nights at The Co-operators Centre.
