The University of Regina's men's hockey team scored the first four goals of the game and ended up with a 4-3 win over Lethbridge on Friday night at the Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge.
Sanfred King,
Carter Selinger,
John Sonntag, and
Matt Strueby all scored for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 2-1-0 with the victory.
Andrew Hayes got the start between the pipes for the U of R and made 35 saves to secure his second win of the season.
Clayton Cumiskey had a pair of goals and Chase Schaber also scored for Lethbridge (0-2-1).
King opened the scoring just over two minutes into the first period with a quick release from the slot. Playing against his former team,
Brayden Nargang drew the assist on King's first goal as a Cougar. Selinger added to the lead less than two minutes later, poking a loose puck past Lethbridge starter Damien Ketlo.
Craig Cuthbert was credited with the helper on Selinger's marker.
Sonntag gave the Cougars a three-goal cushion with a long drive that beat Ketlo early in the second. Strueby's goal – his second of the season – put the Cougars up 4-0 just shy of the 12-minute mark of the middle frame and chased Ketlo in favour of backup Dylan Tait.
Cumiskey got the Pronghorns on the board just 19 seconds after Strueby's goal, and Schaber drew Lethbridge to within two goals with a goal 17 seconds into the third.
Despite peppering Hayes with 19 shots in the third period alone, Lethbridge was unable to draw closer until Cumiskey scored his second of the night on the power play with just 37 seconds left. That cut Regina's lead to 4-3, but the Cougars were able to hold on for their second consecutive conference victory.
The Cougars held a 41-38 edge in shots on the net but were held scoreless on their four power play opportunities. Lethbridge was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
The Cougars and the Pronghorns will play again on Saturday night in Lethbridge.
