The University of Regina's men's hockey team completed a two-game road sweep over Lethbridge with a 5-2 victory over the Pronghorns on Saturday night at the Nicholas Sheran Arena.
The Cougars and Lethbridge came into the third period tied at two apiece, but
Brayden Nargang and
Troy Hunter scored 48 seconds apart early in the final frame to put the Cougars up 4-2 and
Tyler Henry iced the game with a shorthanded empty netter – his second goal of the contest – in the final minute.
Lucas Gore got the start in net for the U of R and made 24 saves in the victory.
Matt Strueby also scored for the Cougars, who improve to 3-1-0 with the win and sit in a four-way tie for first place in the Canada West standings.
Strueby opened the scoring for the Cougars just 33 seconds into the first period after taking a short pass from Henry and firing a wrist shot to the top shelf.
Mark Schneider drew the second assist on Strueby's goal, his third of the season. Henry added to the Regina lead just before the nine-minute mark of the first, grabbing a rebound and chipping it past Lethbridge goalie Dylan Tait.
Cass Mappin replied for Lethbridge four minutes later, cutting the Cougar lead to 2-1 heading into the first intermission, and Chase Schaber's power play goal for Lethbridge tied it up midway through the second. Perhaps the biggest of Gore's 24 stops on the night came late in the second, as the second-year goalie stopped a Brent Henke breakaway attempt with a pad save.
Playing against his former team, Nargang scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal just before the six-minute mark of the third.
Tyler Murray and
Sanfred King were credited with helpers on Nargang's marker. Hunter's goal – with assists from
Ryan Dech and Schneider – followed shortly thereafter, giving the second-year forward his third goal and eighth point of the young season.
The Cougars will now have two consecutive home weekends, as they'll host Calgary on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 and Mount Royal on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27.
