The University of Regina's men's hockey team improved its win streak to four games after recording a 2-0 victory over No. 8-ranked Calgary on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Troy Hunter and
James Friedel both scored for the Cougars, while
Andrew Hayes had a 21-save shutout as the U of R improves to 4-1-0 on the season and remains in a tie with Saskatchewan for first place in the Canada West standings.
The Cougars opened the scoring late in the first period on the power play.
Matt Strueby slid a pass over to Hunter on a 2-on-1 and the second-year forward made no mistake, notching his fourth goal of the season.
Tyler Henry drew the second assist on Hunter's goal.
Friedel's first CIS goal was a beauty, coming just short of the seven-minute mark of the second period. Assists went to
Matt Sawa and
Tanner Lange for Friedel's goal, which turned out to be the last scoring of the game.
Calgary goalie Dustin Butler made 22 saves in the loss for the Dinos.
The game was a relatively penalty-free affair, as the Cougars were 1-for-4 on the power play and Calgary was held scoreless on its two opportunities with the man advantage.
The Cougars and Calgary (3-2-0) will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
