The University of Regina's women's hockey team hung around with the No. 1-ranked Calgary Dinos for the entire game, but the Cougars were defeated 3-0 on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
Jenna Smith scored twice for Calgary and Heather Berzins scored the other, while Amanda Tapp stopped all 22 Regina shots to notch a shutout for the Dinos.
Toni Ross got the start between the pipes for the Cougars, stopping 24 of Calgary's 27 shots in the loss.
Smith opened the scoring with about seven minutes left in the first period, tapping in a back-door pass from Iya Gavrilova. Calgary increased the lead to two just over a minute later, when a Melissa Zubick shot was blocked but Berzins was able to collect the rebound and put it past Ross.
Smith added an insurance marker seven minutes into the second after breaking in on a 2-on-1 with Hayley Wickenheiser, who assisted on both of Smith's goals.
Neither team was able to capitalize on its four opportunities with the power play. Calgary – which was held to its lowest offensive output of the Canada West schedule – ended up with a 27-22 edge in shots in the win.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start and will be webcast live at
