The University of Regina's men's hockey team continued its hot start to the conference schedule as the Cougars edged Mount Royal by a 2-1 score on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.
Tyler Murray and
Tyler Henry both scored for Regina, while
Lucas Gore got the start between the pipes and stopped 28 of Mount Royal's 29 shots in the victory. The win improves the U of R's record to 5-2-0 as the Cougars move into sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings with 10 points.
Eric Galbraith replied for Mount Royal, which drops to 1-6-0 on the season.
Murray opened the scoring for Regina midway through the first period, notching his second of the season with helpers from
Sanfred King and
Brayden Nargang. Murray's goal stood as the only one of the opening 20 minutes despite the two teams combining for 25 shots in the first period alone.
Regina extended its lead early in the second period with Mount Royal's Dominic Perrault serving a tripping minor. Henry took a pass in the slot and snapped a shot bar down, giving the U of R a two-goal lead.
Russ Nielsen and
John Sonntag both drew assists on Henry's goal, his team-leading fifth of the season.
The Cougars turned the tables on Mount Royal after the visitors enjoyed a 16-9 shot advantage in the first period, as Regina peppered Justin Cote with 19 shots in the middle frame alone.
Gore's shutout was ruined with five minutes left in the third period after a turnover at the red line. Galbraith went in on a 2-on-1 and went high glove side on Gore to score his second of the season, but that would be the last goal of the night. Mount Royal had a few late chances to tie the game, but weren't able to beat Gore.
The two teams will meet again at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
