The University of Regina's women's hockey team gave up two goals in the opening six minutes, but came roaring back for a 5-2 victory over Mount Royal on Friday night in Calgary.

Stephanie Sawchuk's unassisted goal early in the third period stood as the game winner, while Kendra Finch, Rianne Wight, Triston Riemer, and Paige Wheeler all scored for the Cougars in the victory. Jennifer Schmidt made 22 saves for the U of R, which improves to 4-3-0 with the win.

The Cougars finished Friday's games in third place in the Canada West standings with eight points.

Mount Royal's Christina Hodgson notched the game's opening goal just 1:34 in, scoring on a one-timer from a pass by Emily Harrison. Hodgson struck again four minutes later, scoring on a rebound with Mount Royal on a power play.

But that was all the offence Mount Royal would muster in the contest, and Regina got on the scoreboard just shy of midway through the first. Finch collected a rebound and scored her first of the season at 9:20, and Wight tied the game at 2-2 just four minutes later on another goal off a rebound.

Mount Royal enjoyed a 10-4 shot advantage in the first period. The home side had a similar 12-4 edge in shots in the second period, but neither team was able to light the lamp in middle frame.

Sawchuk's first of the season put the Cougars into the lead for good just under four minutes into the third as her shot through a screen beat Mount Royal goalie Kendall Kilgour. Finch extended the lead to 4-2 with a wrist shot that chased Kilgour from the contest, and Wheeler added an insurance goal 11 minutes in to put the game away.

Toni Ross came in after Hodgson's second goal, but Schmidt returned to the U of R net four minutes later as the Cougars went on a power play midway through the first.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Calgary.
